Gynecomastia Surgery
What Is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is the over-development or over-enlargement of male breasts. This condition occurs because of factors such as hormonal imbalance, heredity, or age, and causes the male to grow female-looking breasts.
The procedure known as Gynecomastia Surgery or Male Breast Reduction removes glandular tissue and/or excess fat from the body so that the male breasts are returned to normal size. The goal of the gynecomastia surgery is to give males a more masculine look, which not only helps their self-image but can also help with their health.
How Is the Male Breast Reduction Procedure Performed?
There are many options when it comes to the surgery itself. It all depends on a number of factors, but some of the typical ways the surgery is done include the following: removal of the excess tissue under the breasts, and liposuction to remove the excess fat from the chest wall.
Both of these types of male breast reduction surgery are performed by an incision made underneath the breasts.

What Can I Expect After the Recovery Period?
It takes time after surgery for your body to heal, and once your swelling goes down (depending on your body) you should begin to see results. Typically, the initial swelling may last from four to six weeks.
It may take from six to eight months to see complete results. However, because a gynecomastia surgery removes fat, causing your breasts to return to the shape they were before gynecomastia, you should see a difference in the look of your chest soon after the swelling goes down.
You should always follow the directions of your doctor when it comes to recovery, because you don’t want to do anything that will cause any undue harm to your body, which needs time to heal.
Also, the time it takes to heal depends on which type of surgery you had. If you had a simple removal of the fatty tissue surrounding your glands through liposuction, swelling will go down faster and healing will be quicker.
If glandular breast tissue excision was involved, it will take longer for your swelling to go down. This is because this surgery is more intensive, causing your body to need more time to recover.
Why Should I Consider This Procedure?
There are many reasons why males get male breast reduction surgery done, including not liking the way they look and having comfort problems due to their gynecomastia.
It is important to check with your doctor to see if this type of surgery is right for you. The your plastic surgeon needs to make sure your skin has good elasticity, meaning your skin needs to be able to shrink down to fit the chest’s new contours. Older men may not have enough skin elasticity to be able to have this surgery.
Also, obese patients may not be ideal for this procedure. In order for the surgery to be truly helpful, you need to have a weight that is about 30 to 40 pounds within the ideal body weight for a male of your height and age.
